Kubota Garden

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

This morning we took the boys to Kubota Garden.  It is a Japanese-style garden operated by the city of Seattle.  It’s relatively large and there is no admission charge.  Honestly, I was very impressed as it had several trails, ponds, creeks, waterfalls, and several varieties of trees.  Being January, there wasn’t much in the way of plants to check out – at least from a color standpoint.  The boys, especially Zach, loved it.  They loved venturing up and down the trails, over bridges and along narrow paths.  The main hiccup came when Nate wanted to go back to the same bridge over and over…finally, mom had to drag him away and that was the end of it for Nate – Total Meltdown!  Nate begin 1 and 1/2 is at that ripe tantrumy age where he knows what he wants but doesn’t understand why he can’t have it.  Afterwards we took the boys to the Elliott Bay Brewery (our usual hangout) for lunch.  Now the lil terrors are peacefully sleeping.  Here are some picts.

Overlooking one of the many streams and ponds.

Close up of water on needles.

Some of the color that was on display today.

It’s not often I get a shot of the boys together – here they are on what would become Nate’s bridge.

Zach movin all over the grounds.

Fern sitting on water.  This was taken handheld with a 300mm lens at 1/30 f/4…not too bad.

Nate’s bridge.

Nate protesting.  I think he’ll make a fine anti-war activist some day with all of this practice.

On the weather note, we received about a 1/4″ of snow last night and it’s been snowing very, very lightly all day with no accumulation.  Supposedly, this snow will end in a few hours and the temps will plummet into the low 20s.  The expectation is a return to warmer, rainier weather later this week.

Seward Park Trip

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

To those who were attempting to enjoy Seward Park from 3pm to 4pm today…We are sorry.  It was our kids who were screaming and ruining your enjoyable stroll through nature.  Seriously, what a little terror Nate turned into today.  That’s what happens when you deprive a toddler of a nap…or rather when he does the nap shaft.  On top of that, when Nate wasn’t screaming, Zach was being annoying – it was a tag team.

We headed over to Seward Park and walked along the wooded trail along the ridge to the end – down to the water.  We took the paved path back to the parking lot.  While it was a beautiful and brisk afternoon, our boys made themselves heard loud and clear.

Playing at home this morning.

Trail at Seward Park.

While it looks peaceful, it really wasn’t with Nate screaming.

Ferns and moss growing on trees.

A view of Lake Washington.

To finish off the day, we came home and had a fire.  BTW, it is now snowing outside although we are not expected to have any accumulation.  We are supposed to get cold tonight and tomorrow – lows in the 20s.

Poopin In The Potty

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

Last night, Zach pooped in the potty all by himself.  Woohoooo!  What a big boy.  We actually thought he was only going into pee, then he called us in to point out his major achievement.  Well, he had actually flushed it already but there was evidence in the potty, on the seat, and on his hands.  Yep, we still have some work to do, but this is huge.

Congratulations Zach!

Beautiful Weekend

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

Yesterday started off foggy (after a week of low clouds and fog and temps staying in the 30s day and night) but we finally broke out for the afternoon.  Today was absolutely gorgeous from sunrise to sunset.  We even got to 50 degrees today.  I spent time working in the yard and garage.  I tested out our new kerosene heater (to be used to heat the garage in the winter or for emergencies) and pruned a large bush back to a few major limbs (it looks ugly now but by June it will be full and green).

We took the boys and Lou to the park.  We spent a lot of time strolling along the water and at the playground.  This trip to the park couldn’t have come soon enough – the boys are starting to go a little whacky being shut in the house.

View from the playground at Lincoln Park looking South.

Nate walking Lou (or vice versa).

Crystal clear view over the sound.

I also ran yesterday and today…I’ll start tracking my training on a separate page.

I’m in Training!

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

So I’ve decided to join up with Team in Training and I plan on running the Seattle Rock n’ Roll Marathon on June 27th.  Yes, I plan to run 26.2 miles in Seattle.  Team in Training is organized by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society – so I’ll be working on fundraising for the organization.

I don’t have my donation link yet but will soon…and training basically starts immediately.  I’m very excited about this and hope to find lots of support from everyone!  More info to come soon.

BTW, I’ll track all of my training on the web site (a separate page) so you can follow along on I’m doing.

Facebook

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

Facebook finally sucked me in today.  I’ve put off joining but over the last few days I’ve received several invites.  So I checked it out and was intrigued when I found a 5th grade photo of me.

I’m the dorky little kid with the big collar in the background!  I remember that seat as that is where I was when I snuck a whoopy cushion under Michelle (2nd from the left) as a joke – That did not go over well with the teacher.

Here is a photo of me in high school – only time I ever made the paper.  I know – I look like Tom Cruise!

In other news, I’m going to Copper Mountain for the weekend of February 6th for a quick 2 days of skiing with Brian.  Steph’s mom is coming up to help with the kids – so I can ski without guilt.  Later in February we’ll be heading down to Eugene to spend a long weekend with Jan and Mike – that should be fun.

Rain and Wind

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

Two days ago we had 32 degree weather with 4.5 inches of snow.  Tonight we are getting hit with high winds (gusts into the 40 to 50 MPH range) and we are starting to get heavier rainfall.  Fortunately we live near one of the windier spots in the Central Puget Sound region – Alki Point.  I just took a drive down there and checked out the action.  Winds are a steady 25 to 30 mph but I’d say the winds up here on our hill are definitely gustier.

Here is a quick video I took.

I must admit – I really do enjoy the PNW weather scene!

No More Snow

Monday, January 5th, 2009

At 11pm last night we had 4.5 inches on the ground…all gone tonight.  It was 32 degrees last night and 43 degrees this morning.  I got some pictures before the warm weather showed up.

Looking down our street.

Our snowy home.

Now we get rain..and from what they are saying, they expect up to 4 inches of rain in the Seattle metro area by Thursday.  That is quite a bit for us.  Then we get a dry and warm (upper 40s) weekend.

The recent cold weather has made me order a kerosene heater for those possible power outage situations (power only went out briefly last night).  Here is a link to the heater that I ordered.

Snowing Again

Sunday, January 4th, 2009

So snow was only partially in our forecast tonight.  The thought was that we would get no more than an inch and it would change to rain…Well, 3.5 inches later and it’s still snowing.  Buses are already stuck on our streaks and no plows or salt are to be seen.  This is great!

i just hope our daycare will open tomorrow since Steph and I need a break from the boys.

Back to the snow, the latest is that it will change to rain between 10pm and Midnight…hopefully enough rain falls to clear the streets by morning.

Good Book

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

Just finished “Snowstruck: In the Grip of Avalanches” by Jill Fredston (Amazon)…This was a very good, fast reading book about real life experiences of Jill and her husband Doug Fesler who are avalanche experts in Alaska.

They are called out to assess avalanche risk after slides for would-be rescuers to ensure their safety, received requests from friends and sports nuts aiding them in assessin risks for a skiing, snowboarding, or snomachine trip, and for other purposes like land zoning for avalanche risk. They run avalanche awareness training and consistently spend time in the field understanding avalanches.

Jill’s takes a scientific subect and tells it like a series of stories.  Her writing style makes this very readable and understandable.  Her storytelling keeps the reader intrigued, involved, and excited to learn more about avalanches.
