Katherine Harris is an idiot. Check out these latest comments by her on cnn.com.
To summarize, she said “If you’re not electing Christians, then in essence you are going to legislate sin” and she claims that the separation of church and state is “a lie”.
Fortunately, even fellow Republicans are distancing themselves from her and she isn’t expected to win her senate bid. Thank God! And that’s no lie.
So why am I writing about her? Who cares what some ultra right wing conservative wanna-be loser politician says? Simple, she, along with our Supreme Court, stole the 2000 election. It’s clear that her thinking is so far right, that she is on the lunatic fringe – this is not the kind of thinking we want in our elected officials. Given the wide variety of ethnicities, religions, races, and orientations in the US, we need moderate people in government who govern for the people – not their religion. Our constition and government has succeeded for so long because we’ve kept religion (for the most part) out of government.
You might ask – How can you be so judgemental? Maybe she’s fair but just passionate about her beliefs? Uh, no. According to the article she’s entangled in a mess with illegal campaign contributions. She’s corrupt and she corrupted the 2000 election.
There are two new Zach movies posted on the web site.
Today we took a drive to Mt St Helens. WOW! What an amazing place. It’s incredible how much forest was destroyed by the blast and how close David Johnstone was to the mountain. For those who don’t know, David Johnstone was a USGS employee monitoring the volcano from approximately 6 miles away to the north. Unfortunately he was killed within seconds of the explosion. He had enough time to radio the main USGS office in Vancouver, WA that the explosion was occurring.
The drive down was long for Zach but he was a trooper. Here are some photos.
Posing for Mom.
Westerly view of the mountain. It was very hazy so the photos were not particularly good.
Mountain lake (called Coldwater Lake) created by ash dam.
Looks like the desert.
It’s amazing to think that this was a lush forest. Now, 26 years later, and small plants barely grow within the blast zone. The ash flows were very deep – this is apparent by the deep ravines cut by streams flowing from the mountain.
We’ll need to return via Windy Ridge above Spirit Lake – there is a huge field of fallen trees that is an amazing site.
I miss you and haven’t talked to you for a while, so mommy said I
should write and tell you all about my day. Mommy says that Grandma
likes it when I give lots of detail so I will try my best. I got up
at about 6:45 this morning. I slept well last night despite my ear.
I don’t think mommy told you but I fell down when I was practicing
walking yesterday on the deck. I landed against the wood
railing of the deck with my right ear causing a one inch purple
bruise line on my ear. (But I was brave and only cried for a minute
or so). Anyway, mommy gave me some tylenol before bed last night
because she was worried about it swelling over night. It didn’t and
I slept fine.
Anyway, after I woke up, mommy and I played in my room for a little
while. Just played with the Farm puzzle and some of
the ball toys. But I was hungry for breakfast pretty quick. Mommy
made me an Eggo Waffle, and cut up an entire banana, and a whole
cereal bar for me. I ate everything. It was delicious. I think
breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. After breakfast, I got
dressed. It was a little chilly this morning so mommy put me in
jeans, a long sleeved white shirt and a maroon sweatshirt. We played
a little more in the house but I wanted to be outside so I threw a
couple small tantrums to make sure mommy was aware what I wanted.
Mommy eventually figured it out.
So mommy and I took a stroll to the coffee shop. Mommy got some
fancy latte thing and the newspaper. She then parked me outside and
sat next to me. I watched cars for a half hour. There were trucks
and buses, and police cars, and all sorts of people coming in and out
of the coffee shop. Even though I had eaten breakfast pretty
recently, I had some water and Kix cereal as I watched all the
traffic go by. It was great. Mommy seemed to like it too commenting
about getting a chance to caffeinate herself so she could keep up
with me all day and getting a chance to read the paper.
Mommy and I eventually strolled home. Then I decided to poop for the
first time that day. Mommy, however, noticed it too quickly because
she changed me before I was done. So I did a smallish sized poop,
got changed, and then did a really big poop and had to be changed
again. I guess it is good that mommy changed me in the middle or
else it might have escaped out of the sides of my diaper. So we
played downstairs for a while with the fire-truck and the rocking
horse and just walking around holding on to Lou’s toys and other
things. Then mommy got me in the car and we drove to Bellevue. It
took about 30 minutes to get there because even though it was 9:45,
there was a bunch of traffic merging onto I-5. Not sure why. I took
a 15 minute power nap in the car and I am glad I did since I didn’t
know where we were going.
We ended up at a mall. We strolled around a little bit and ended up
at a place called the “Children’s Museum.” I haven’t been to many
museums but it wasn’t like any museum I had ever heard of. There
were three main rooms filled with stuff for kids to do. I was only
of an age appropriate to play in the room called “the backyard.”
There were all sorts of toys to play with – I especially liked the
trains. I got to walk and crawl around all over. There were some
nooks with musical instruments to bang on and doors to open and
close. There was also a little slide that looked like a big tree
that mommy helped me go down. I was a little scared at first since I
didn’t recognize any of the other kids there. I also was the
youngest kid there, but certainly not the smallest. After a little
time playing, I got more comfortable and mommy had a hard time
keeping up with me. We played there for about 45 minutes. Mommy
then said we had to leave so I could get home for lunch. I didn’t
want to leave but mommy made me. (I threw a little fit, but was over
it by the time we were half way through the mall.)
So mommy and I drove home and then we had lunch. I had a peanut
butter and jelly sandwich and some peas and carrots and peaches. I
ate a lot and it was yummy. Then I went down for a nap. I didn’t
fall asleep right away but was asleep pretty quick. I slept from
around noon til about 2:30. Mommy told me that she did some chores
around the house and finally took a shower during that time (she was
stinky.) After I got up, mommy changed my diaper and found that I
had pooped AGAIN. (Ha!) We then played a lot downstairs. Mommy let
me play with a remote but she didn’t tell me that she had taken out
the batteries first. (That’s why it wouldn’t do anything! Smart
mommy!) After playing for a while, I
pooped again. Yup, the 4th poopy diaper of the day.
I walked all over the downstairs and tried to pull stuff off the
shelfs and get into trouble. A new favorite game of mine is playing
in the closet of the guest room downstairs. I get very mad when
mommy takes away from me toys that I have found. Today mommy brought
downstairs this cold shiny can with “Diet Pepsi” written on it.
Mommy was not happy when I wanted to play with it. I got MAD when
she took it away and threw a little tantrum. I eventually got over
it. Then Lou and Mommy and I went for a stroll around the
neighborhood. We walked around for about a half hour while I had
some cereal. I really like to snack while we stroll (and look at
cars). Mommy put Lou in the backyard and we continued to hang out in
the front yard. We watched cars for awhile from my stroller, but
that got boring because there are not enough cars that go by. So
mommy took me out of the stroller and I walked around the house
some. I kept trying to walk towards the street to be close to the
cars but mommy wouldn’t let me for some reason. But I did do a lot
of practice walking outside.
Eventually, mommy took me back inside and gave me some toys to play
with in the kitchen while she made me dinner. I had pasta and some
more peas and carrots and some mandarin oranges for dinner. I ate a
lot. Daddy came home while I was just finishing my dinner. After
dinner, I showed daddy how much I have improved on my walking by
walking all over from the kitchen to my bedroom to my parents room
and back numerous times without falling down. Daddy seemed a little
shocked at how good I was walking. (He also seemed a little annoyed
about how much more work it was to keep an eye on me now. I’m not
sure why he feels the need to keep an eye on me, I don’t ever get
into any trouble.) Anyway, we played for a little while. Then mommy
got me in my jammies and to bed. At some point during the day I
pooped again, not sure when, but mommy reminded me that she changed 5
poopy diapers total today (although 2 of those were small). Mommy
read me the Barnyard Dance book and Goodnight Moon. Then sang one
verse of Twinkle Twinkle. I had the hiccups so I didn’t fall asleep
right away, but didn’t stay up too long.
Anyway, so that was my day. I had fun. Back to school tomorrow.
Miss you very much and can’t wait for BOTH of you to visit.
Zacher
Zach starting walking on August 10th (day late birthday present for daddy). He started with around 4 steps on the 10th and now he’s cruising around pretty well. Here’s a movie.
There were lots of activities this weekend. Paul started Saturday doing 3 hours of volunteer work – digging up blackberry root balls and cutting tree rings at a local park. Actually, it’s not quite a park yet – that’s why Paul was there helping out. Later in the day we went to the ‘Taste of Edmonds’…lame. We left and had a drink at Arnies in Edmonds, and then went down to Bottleworks. We picked up some beers and headed home.
Today I pulled weeds, layed out some bark (yes, the bark that I had shipped up here), and trimmed the ivy and bushes around the house. I had already mowed the lawn yesterday. Then I went for a run at Lincoln Park. After that we had lunch at Elliot Bay Brewing Company and took a stroll at Schmitz Preserve. I then returned to Schmitz Preserve with Lou – for some more strolling and exercise. Steph and Zach took a trip to Target and Trader Joes.
Anyway, Schmitz Preserve was beautiful – a complete oasis in West Seattle.
This had to be one of the most perfect weekends weather-wise I’ve ever experienced. The days were warm (low to mid 80s) but not too hot, and the evenings were pleasant with no wind. The sunsets were incredible and many people were out late into the evening enjoying the weather.
In addition, Julia was in town from Germany and we got to see her at Golden Gardens Park. The picnic was at the beach at Golden Gardens from 6pm to 11pm. With Zach we obviously didn’t stay until 11pm, but I was amazed at how full the park was with people BBQing and others just hanging out on the beach. It was wonderful seeing Julia and meeting her Seattle friends – hopefully we’ll be able to see her in December when she returns for a visit.
Today, we spent the morning at Lincoln Park strolling with Zach and walking Lou. We had a very enjoyable walk along the Sound. Steph is now coming down with Zach’s cold so she laid low the rest of the day. I went on a bike ride through Lincoln Park and up thru Alki and back. Tonight I returned to Alki for some photo ops. I’ve pasted my favorites below.

We are finally moved in. Sorry I haven’t updated this in a while but we’ve been busy. Let me provide a very quick synopsis (since I’m at work I shouldn’t spend too much time on this).
Steph spent Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday last week taking the bar exam in Bellevue. On Friday the moving truck showed up with our stuff from storage – I believe our stuff expanded while in storage – cuz there was a lot more than what I remember.
We were able to unpack some while the movers were here. This was good since they took our boxes and packing paper. Then we spent all day Saturday and Sunday unpacking boxes in the house and dropping the boxes/paper off at the recycling center. As for the house, we are pretty well settled…we have 0 boxes sitting around our home. However, our garage is a totally different story. It’s packed with stuff. Part of the problem is that our old fridge, washer, and dryer are sitting in the garage (fridge is too big for the kitchen and the dryer is gas – our home dryer needs to be electric). So we are using the appliances left by the previous owners.
We went to a mini block party on our street last night and met a bunch of neighbors. It definitely seems like a very friendly street with lots of kids – very exciting.
Here is our only picture from the move…Zach is bushed.
