News Racism?!?

Wednesday, August 31st, 2005

Check out this blog entry comparing two images and their captions of looters.

Racist News Stories

Personally, if I was stuck in New Orleans like the thousands that are…I would be looting also. At least for food and water since it comes down to survival. The local, state, and federal government aren’t doing squat to help out - of course people will loot.

Idiotic News Reporters

Monday, August 29th, 2005

I’m all for going to a hurricane and reporting on it…but I wouldn’t stand under power lines! Or next to a building with roofing flying off! These are just a few of the stupid things I saw reporters do during their Hurricane coverage.

The Weather Channel seemed to have the most veteran crew - you didn’t see Jim Cantore standing outside dodging flying debris that could kill him. CNN was a step down from TWC as far as weather smarts. They were outside but not in the worst parts. They evacuated well inland to provide continuous live coverage, but they were still in harms way Monday morning.

Fox News definitely gets the Darwin Awards for standing in the face of danger. They seemed to want their reporters to be in the most severe spot as long as possible. They had one guy on the MS coast with the eye about 80 to 100 miles to his south. He was commenting on how the storm wasn’t that strong…duh! I assume he got out to safer ground although they continually talked about seeking shelter in this motel near them next to the beach. Basically, it was 3 to 5 hours from landfall and the Fox team was still looking for shelter. Morons!

Plus, Fox News was very disappointed when Katrina was downgraded from Category 5 to Category 4…they showed visible disappointment in what could have otherwise been a great story. Sad :-( They rather have maximum destruction vs saving lives and property…they make more money that way.

Well, just another reason to not watch Fox News. It’s clear that Fox News wants the most dangerous, ludicrous, self serving view into an incident…no matter what the cost to others or they’re own.

Hurricane Katrina!

Sunday, August 28th, 2005

WOW! This thing is enormous and very, very dangerous. The Weather Channel latest report has winds @ 184MPH and pressure at 902mb.

This could cause a storm surge of up to 28ft! This definitely has the potential to be a catastrophic storm and I hope everyone evacuates - this is not a storm to ride out.

Aug.29.2005 Obviously the hurricane is gone - hence the changing satellite picture. Here is the NWS data on Katrina

Zach’s First Giants Games

Saturday, August 27th, 2005

Zach attended his first SF Giants baseball game last night. They played the NY Mets and lost 1 to 0. Zach (and parents) sat in the Club Level (section 231). Prior to the game he hung out at the bar while he…I mean…mom and dad had a few beers.

He even got a Lou Seal picture for attending his first game. He was a perfect gentleman the whole time. I don’t think he ever cried. He talked a lot, but he seemed very interested in his surroundings.

Word of advice for dads: when you take your kid to the bathroom to change him, don’t attempt to go the bathroom while holding him and the diaper bag…what a mess!

Zach goes Wine Tasting

Sunday, August 21st, 2005

Yes, we took Zachary wine tasting up to Dry Creek Valley. We got a shot of his first winery.

Zach's first winery

We started off at Deux Amis Winery and Wilson Winery. They share the same building. Deux Amis had wonderful Zins - best of the day. Next we stopped at the little country store next to Dry Creek Vineyard and had some sandwiches. We then drove up to Bella Winery to check out the caves and views.

We then went to Yokaim Bridge, Pallascagua, and Dry Creek. We stayed with Carla and Gil on their ranch in Healdsburg. We had the upstairs of a converted barn to ourselves. They had built a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and living room in the upstairs. Last night we had dinner at Bear Republic Brewery in Healdsburg.

All-in-all…a very relaxing weekend. Zach was a champ.

Mountain Biking

Thursday, August 11th, 2005

Ok…so I’ve never been much of a biker. I definitely prefer running and hiking. But after hiking a few times up at El Corte Madera, I figure it’s time to try it out on a mountain bike. Plus, my joints would probably last longer :-)

I picked up my mountain bike tonight :D a Gary Fisher Tassajara. What a bike! I took it for an inaugural spin for about 30 minutes. And yes, I was sore. Well, it’s been about 10 years since I’ve ridden a bike. Running and biking do not work the same muscles. Plus there is the butt soreness.

Anyway, I’m excited to get out there this weekend, but I’ll have to take it easy. For one, I’m a crappy mountain bike rider. Two, I need to build up the biking muscles. I’ll probably do some relatively easy street riding and some easy trail riding.

More to come…and hopefully some photos.
