Things Happen in 3s

Sunday, March 27th, 2005

Well, Steph just completed one of those ‘things happen in 3s week’s.

  1. High blood pressure. Steph is 31 weeks pregnant and last Monday Steph had her biweekly checkup. Her BP was 160 over something…the something was lost in the scare of having the systolic so high. Steph’s normal blood is 110-120/70-76. So having systolic pressure of 160 was frightening. The doctor ordered her to the hospital where she was monitored for 4 hours and they did blood and urine samples. Her blood pressure was normal in the hospital. She returned on Tuesday for additional monitoring. Again the readings were fine. We picked up a BP monitor so she can take her pressure twice per day. So far so good.
  2. Sprained ankle. Steph slipped on the stairs leading into our garage Friday after work. She didn’t fall so the baby is fine. But she tweaked her ankle pretty well. I guess it’s tough to navigate stairs when you can’t see your feet. This meant I was pulling double duty this weekend…no problem, I got things done and was only mildly cranky. Her ankle was feeling better today…she even got some laundry done :-)
  3. Power Outage. On Saturday we headed up to the Golden Gate Theatre in San Francisco to see the musical, Evita. Sometime between 7:30pm and 8:00pm a power outage hit a 10 block region of San Francisco including the Golden Gate Theatre. The show did not go on :-( We waited till around 8:20 when they announced the show was cancelled. It turns out there was a fire in a PG&E substation and the power was out for several hours.

So, those are Steph’s 3 items. Hopefully that’s all the excitement we see until the baby is born.

Friday Nights

Sunday, March 20th, 2005

Wow…Friday Nights are happening! Movies…nah. Bars…nah. Fancy dinners…nope.
Grocery Shopping! Yep, that’s what we do now. And we get dressed up in our fancy duds. Check out this outfit Steph wore this last Friday night.
Nice Outfit!

Now that’s nice :-)I particularly like the puckered lips and the booties. Ugg!

Photography Sites

Friday, March 18th, 2005

Frequently I hear people discussing the purchase of a digital camera, and these discussions inevitably contain all sorts of photography jargon. Purchasing a camera, or for that matter any piece of electronics, requires research and an understanding of what comes with a camera…and what does it mean.

There are two common places for obtaining camera knowledge: magazines and the internet. I’m not a big magazine person anymore, so I won’t be mentioning any here. Now on to the internet. I’m sure there are many photography websites, but I would like to mention my favorite.

The first 2 sites contain plenty of reviews that are very thorough. In addition they accurately present the fact about each camera so there is no question about what you are getting. Each site receives cameras for testing so they are not just reading specs online and re-wording it.

The Niners and KNBR

Thursday, March 10th, 2005

Finally, the 49ers will be broadcast on a real sports radio station. The 49ers and KNBR entered into a 4 year agreement. KNBR 680/1050 and The Bone 107.7 will share broadcast duties of 49ers games plus players and coaches interviews.

This is great news since the quality of niner coverage was awful on KGO. It’s only fitting the Bay Area’s sports radio station get the Niners. I’m very excited for this partnership.

Now, we just need the Niners to win!

Big Basin

Thursday, March 10th, 2005

2 weekends back, Brian and I did a day hike at Big Basin. In the past I have hiked from the park headquarters to Berry Creek Falls and back. It’s roughly 12 miles with a fair amount of elevation change on the way back.

This time around we hiked from the ocean to Berry Creek Falls. You can get details on this hike from bahiker.com.

The day we went it was overcast which is good when you are hiking 13 miles. We stuck to the hiker only trail…big mistake. As it turns out it merges with the all use (horse, bike, and hike) trail about a mile later. Unfortunately we were on the wrong side of the creek. There was not bridge…no, wait…there was a seasonal footbridge. Unfortunately it wasn’t in season. So off came the shoes and socks as we waded on sharp rocks in 45 degree water. Not much fun.

We were able to stay out of the water for the rest of the hike.

The waterfalls were amazing. Berry Creek Falls is an incredibly beautiful waterfull and the 3 falls above it aren’t too shabby either. Everything was green and damp with lots of newts and banana slugs.
